An easy-to-follow cheat sheet for storing vegetables and keeping them fresh for longer. These are tips for storing vegetables that are commonly used in Pakistani households.
CUCUMBER 🥒
Store in a plastic bag with holes. 5-6 holes per bag.
Alternatively, cling wrap each piece
Fresh for: 10-15 days
Also goes for: eggplant, radish, capsicum
CHILLIES 🌶
Wash and dry before storing
Remove stems and store in a container with paper towels
TOMATOES 🍅
Wash and dry before storing
Store them in a paper bag
Fresh for: 15-20 days
GINGER
Wash and dry before storing
Store in an airtight container with paper towels
GARLIC 🧄
Store in a glass jar or plastic container
BHINDI
Wash and dry before storing
Store in a thick brown paper bag
Fresh for: 5 days
To store bhindi longer, wash and dry then cut both edges and store in an airtight container with paper towels.
Fresh for: 7-10 days
LEAFY GREENS 🥬
- Cut off the extra stems
- Store in a plastic box with paper towels above and below
Note: Wash before cooking only
Also goes for: spinach, coriander, methi
MINT 🌿
- Cut off the mint sprigs
- Soak muslin cloth in water then squeeze out the water so the cloth is damp, not wet
- Spread mint on the damp muslin cloth
- Wrap the cloth like a pastry
- Place in a ziplock bag but don’t zip it all the way
Fresh for: 7 days
LEMON 🍋
- Get glass jar
- Put a piece of paper towel at the bottom
- Add lemons
- Put the lid back on
Fresh for: 10-15 days
BROCCOLI/CAULIFLOWER 🥦
Wrap in cling wrap or divide into large florets and store in a large food container with a towel.
Fresh for: 10 days
CARROTS 🥕
Wrap them in cling wrap or store them in an airtight plastic container with paper towels at the bottom and on top of the carrots.
Fresh for: 10-15 days
GREEN BEANS
Store in a cloth bag, ziplock bag, or plastic box with paper towels.
GOURD/PUMPKIN
Wrap in cling wrap. Can also cling wrap half. Or, peel cut, and store the pumpkin in an airtight container.
